If you want to add items to your Amazon cart:
Pick one set of paint. Each set has all the basic colors you will need. These curations are selected to give different price point options- the lower the price, the less quantity of paint you will get. The quality is relatively the same. Read more below to help you decide what is best for you at this time. (prices are from Amazon as of October 2026 and may change):
Small budget: Winsor & Newton set, about $22 → Medium budget: Mont Marte set, about $67 → What I use: Winsor & Newton 200ml tubes, about $113 →
Add additional supplies This link includes additional supplies and optional items, so delete anything you don't need or already have after you click add to cart. Read more below to understand what you may or may not need.

Oil Colors
You only need one of these three options.
Small budget: Winsor & Newton Winton set, 10 x 12ml tubes (about $22)
This is the same paint as the large tubes listed below, which we use in class. It is a great quality, but this small tube size allows a lower price point starting out. The tubes go a long way on small canvases until you're ready to buy bigger tubes.
Medium budget: Mont Marte Premium, 100ml tubes (about $67)
Mont Marte is a good student brand. These are mid-size tubes, a step below Winsor & Newton but still quality, and a medium budget option if you're going to continue oil painting.
- Titanium White
- Lemon Yellow
- Vermilion (in place of Cadmium Red)
- Rose Madder (in place of Magenta)
- Phthalo Blue
- Sap Green (in place of Viridian)
- Ivory Black
- Winsor & Newton Winton Burnt Sienna, 200ml (Mont Marte doesn't make a brown in this line, so this one is included in the Mont Marte cart link. You could get a smaller tube from Michaels, or just mix your own brown.)
What I use: Winsor & Newton Winton, 200ml tubes (about $113)
These 200ml tubes will last you years, and they're what I use for myself most of the time.
- Titanium White
- Lemon Yellow Hue
- Cadmium Red Hue
- Magenta
- Phthalo Blue
- Viridian Hue
- Burnt Sienna
- Ivory Black
Painting Surface
I often buy wrapped canvases or canvas panels from Michaels. Any canvas that says it is primed and acid-free is suitable for oils.
Easel
This is what we use in class
Palette
- Neutral gray tempered glass palette, 12 x 16 in, 2 pack
- Razor blade scraper, 2 handles + 20 blades, for scraping dried paint off the glass
I like this palette because mixing on a gray background gives you a better read on the value of your color. A glass frame from the dollar store works too.
Brushes
I usually buy sets of paint brushes anywhere I see ones with well-shaped bristles and a variety of sizes and qualities I like. Walmart and the dollar store have had some of my favorite brushes I've bought.
Here's a set on Amazon that looks like a good start, though I haven't used these myself yet:
- ARTIFY 25-piece paint brush set This includes a palette knife for mixing
Solvent & Cleanup
- Gamblin Gamsol odorless mineral spirits, 8.5 oz. Read my oil safety guide for more information.
- Natural Earth Paint Eco-Solve, 8 oz: a nontoxic version of Gamsol. Read my oil safety guide for more information.
Something airtight to hold your Gamsol or Ecosolve for cleaning brushes:
- SenseYo airtight brush washer, 10 oz, or you can use any glass jar with a tight lid. You can also add a mesh drain cover to help clean your brush.
Cloths for wiping your brushes:
Mediums and other gadgets I Use
- Gamblin Galkyd painting medium, 4 oz Galkyd changes the flow of your paint, speeds up the dry time significantly, and can be used to make glazes or pre 'wet' your canvas to allow you to layer more in a single painting session.
- Gamblin Refined Linseed Oil, 8 oz Linseed oil changes the flow of your paint, does not significantly change the dry time, and can be used to make glazes and 'oiling out' your canvas between painting sessions.
- Metal tube squeezer keys, 12 pack This helps me get all the paint out of the tubes and stay neater. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
